3 Tips For Managing The Morning Madness

I'm a big believer in routine. I'm also a big believer in responsibility and natural consequences, which is why that's what's served for breakfast each and every morning in my house.
I'm sure mornings at your place are just as crazy. So we keep the routine is very simple. We wake up. We eat. We're out the door. Talk is minimal and most mornings it goes like clockwork.
But who among us has not sabotaged him or herself by trying to cram too much into that time? Hey, I'm guilty of it too. But somewhere along the way I realized that less truly was more and adopted that as our morning motto. So here are three things we do without fail to keep the trains running on time.
- Only one wake-up reminder: My kids are old enough now to set their alarms and get themselves up in the morning. But if I don't hear rustling from down the hall, they get one reminder. That's usually enough to get them up and going; memories of a missed breakfast because they were running late for the bus are powerful reminders.
- Pick out clothes the night before: I know you're saying, "Well, duh!" right now but how many of you have kids who actually do it? Precious moments are saved when indecisive teens aren't staring (and yawning) into the closet.
- Easy breakfast: Yep, it's the most important meal of the day but it does not have to be the most complicated. Cereal, fruit and a little protein (which you can make in the microwave in a pinch) is a great meal, but so is toast spread with peanut butter and an apple with a glass of milk.
Obviously you may have to tailor this a bit if your kids are younger but there's no reason they can't do their part by say tackling the responsibility of laying out their own clothes. It will give them a bit of responsibility and ownership of the situation too!
