6 Must-have Summer Shoes for Your Closet

I have written before about my love affair with shoes, so I was ecstatic to see that my colleague, Susan Wagner, had done a post about the perfect shoe to go with the little black dress for summer. And while I whole-heartedly agreed with all of her choices (except the platform part -- more on that later), I kept thinking "What about this shoe?" and "What about that shoe?" So, I decided to expand on Susan's style brilliance a little bit and include six other shoes that should be in your closet for the summer. And if you're on a budget, then I've got you covered!

The wedge is super hot right now and for good reason. You can find it in a variety of colors and styles, and it gives you height while still providing more support than a high heel. Pair wedges with a frilly dress, and you're ready to go for night. Or, slip them on with some shorts and a cute top, and you'll be styling for your brunch date with the girls. The wedges pictured above are perfect for summer with their bright color and cork sole. And for only $25.50 for the first pair and $10 for the second at Charlotte Russe, go ahead and stock up!

Sometimes, any kind of heel just won't do, but that doesn't mean you have to throw on the first pair of rubber flip-flops you come across in your closet. An embellished flat can work at the office or on the playground, and it will look great with just about anything you have in your closet. These are from Forever 21 and will only run you $17.80. If metallic isn't your thing, or a jewel is too much, don't fret. You can find a variety of colors, styles, and textures to fit your life.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with flip-flops. I own about 20 pairs myself. They're my go-to summer shoe, as I'm sure they are for most of you, too. And I'm extremely lucky that I get to wear them to work. But I also try to vary the styles that are in my closet. I have my cheap, rubber thongs for the pool and the beach. Then, I have my sportier pairs in both black and brown. And finally, I have my "dressy" flip-flops that aren't quite ready for evening wear, but will be rockin' with a cute sundress during the day. Target has an entire wall of flip-flops ranging in price from a 2-pack for $5 up to $34.99 for their fancier pairs, so you're sure to find the thong to fit your life!

While flats and flip-flops are awesome and must-haves for your closet, there's nothing more classic than the pump. If you're looking for a little bit of height, try a platform. It doesn't have to be overt. The pumps pictured above (for only $28 at Charlotte Russe!) have a hidden platform, so no one will be the wiser, and like Susan said in her post, the nude color will make your legs look like they go for days (but a punch of color is always fun, too). If the platform of the pump aren't for you, there are heel heights that range from kitten (1/2 inch) up to stiletto (5+ inches). You don't have to settle for one toe style, either. Rounded, pointy, open-toe, or block, there's a style to keep your toes comfy.

Most of you probably have your requisite pair of Nikes or New Balances in your closet for your workouts or yard work. But you don't have to sacrifice style for comfort, either. Sneakers now come in too-cute-for-words styles that will have you running your errands in style. While they probably won't hold up to a 3-mile run every day, that's not what they were intended for. Payless has a line by Champion that fits the cute bill (and won't hurt your wallet, either). These pictured above retail for $29.99.

This season, I am obsessed with all things sailing-inspired. I don't know why. I don't live near the ocean, and I've been on a sailboat only a handful of times (and not for years). But if it has stripes, is blue or red, and there's an anchor on it, sign me up! This includes boat shoes, too. In the past, boat shoes have typically been brown, navy, or cream canvas with a white sole, but that's no longer the case. The makers of boat shoes have upped the ante and are killing it with style. Rack Room Shoes has these adorable pink ones pictured on sale right now for $29.99.
After all of this writing about, looking for, and drooling over shoes, I think it's time I go add to my collection. Happy shopping!
