It's officially the fall season and that means that it's time to put away the flip flops and shorts and pull out the jeans and boots. No matter what your style, the key to a fabulous wardrobe is having the key foundation pieces with which to work. If you're sorting through your closet, look for these five items as the basics you'll need for a solid foundation to your fall wardrobe. If you don't have any or all of them, remember that it's best to invest in these types of pieces and to spend less on the trendier items that you're drawn to. Year after year, these items will serve you well.

1. Great Jeans

In today's world the right jeans can take you just about anywhere. Look for a dark wash which is easier to dress up as well as a slimmer fit that can easily be tucked into a pair of boots or perfectly paired with flats. (Tory Burch Straight Leg Saturated Jean, $185)

2. Knee High Boots

A pair of great boots can be paired with just about anything from skirts and dresses to jeans and corduroys. Choose your favorite color boot whether it be light brown, dark brown, or black and be sure that it hits somewhere between mid-calf and just above the knee and doesn't have a heel higher than about an inch for a boot that offers the versatility that will take you from morning through night every day of the week. (Booker Boots, $200-268)

3. Cashmere Cardigan

Whether you are driving carpool, meeting friends for a night out, or heading to a work meeting, an open cashmere cardigan provides a chic staple that is also incredibly comfortable...in fact it's so comfortable that you're probably going to want to wear it every day. It's like wearing your pajamas all day and looking great while doing so. (Aqua Open Front Cashmere Cardigan, $168)

4. Lightweight Jacket

While there is certainly a chill in the air when fall rolls into town, it's not quite cold enough yet to get the full puffy jacket out of the attic. A quilted jacket is a great alternative as it offers a classic pattern with a little warmth that can easily be layered. (Quilted Riding Jacket, $129)

5. Leather Carryall

You may be beyond the stage of carrying a diaper bag, but chances are that if you're a mom, you probably have quite a few things you're toting around on a daily basis from snacks to a change of clothes for your littlest ones to band aids just in case there is an unfortunate incident. A large leather carryall is a great solution to a stylish handbag that is roomy enough for all your stuff. If you don't do leather, consider a heavy canvas tote in a darker color for a similar effect. (Anytime Tote, $225)

There is no doubt that pulling together a great  looking outfit each day often takes a back seat when you're also trying to hustle the kids out the door in the morning. Heck for many moms, getting a shower and a brush through the hair is a huge accomplishment. But investing in a few key pieces like these will ensure that you'll barely have to think twice when getting dressed each morning and you'll always look fabulous.
