With all of the wonderful things that come with little ones, there are also a few less pleasant things. One of them is the influx of ugly baby gear that can easily take over your home. While some of the gear isn't needed for more than a few months, other items become staples in your life for many years, particularly if you have more than one kid. And one of those items is the baby gate. Whether you opt for a wood or metal or plastic version, they just aren't all that attractive, but as we always want them to be safe we live with the ugliness. But when I came across Kelly Rae Roberts' DIY half-door baby gate, I knew it could solve a lot of décor dilemmas for parents across the globe.

I've heard of parents turning bedroom doors into Dutch doors so that the kids can play in their rooms and be contained but still see out. My mother-in-law did that to my husband's room when he was little and we often talked about doing it for our kids primarily so that they would have to stay in their rooms at bed time, but we never went through with it. But the half-door baby gate is a bit different because it's in a place where you normally wouldn't have a door such as at the top or bottom of a staircase. And because of the paneling that's available in doors and the ability to have them painted in any color, they offer the ability to create a gate that seamlessly blends into your décor rather than being an eyesore.

To make this half-door baby gate, Roberts had one door cut in half and added a little molding to the rough edge, a doorknob, and hinges to each half to be hung. Oh, and you know how you can pay upwards of $100 on one of those unattractive baby gates, well Roberts found the door she used for $5 at a garage sale. Yes, that means she got two baby gates for $5 plus a little more for the parts she needed to hang them. Good looking, inexpensive, and easy; it doesn't get much better than that when it comes to home décor.
