Gourmet Italian Pizza at – Target?

Did you know that you can buy frozen pizza baked in a wood-burning oven in Italy for $4.99? And pick up some batteries and laundry detergent in the same trip?
You can. Target's upscale food brand, Archer Farms, is now importing Italian handmade pizza to a store near you. And let me tell you, they are delicious. Even my Milano-born husband agrees.
We used to find authentic Italian pizza from Trader Joe's, but they were a lot more expensive, and then we moved out of TJ's radius. Target has added more flavors so that now you can get hand-tossed crusts and gourmet ingredients in varieties like:
- Mediterranean Vegetable
- Spinach and Goat Cheese
- Four Cheese
- Sicilian Vegetable
- Mediterranean Arugula and Tomato
The Margherita and Sicilian style with sausage are good too but, if you look closely, they are not made in Italy and, in fact, you don't get that special Neapolitan crust -- crunchy on the outside, yet pillowy on the inside.
Being normal red-blooded American pizza-lovers as well as Italophiles, we have tried a lot of frozen pizzas. Domestic brands like Totino's, DiGiorno, and Freschetta are inexpensive but tend to be heavy on the spices, fat, and preservatives. Pricier takes like Amy's, Paul Newman, and Kashi score high on all-natural ingredients, but just don't cut it when it comes to European flair. Finally, thanks to good old Tar-jhay, we don't have to bust the grocery budget to bake up a real taste of Italy.
